Written by JD Austin
inhyecc.jpgInhye Peterson joined Rio Copa Toastmasters in February of 2006.  By June 2006 she had completed her first four speeches and was forced to take some time off to bring Baby Robert Jr into the world.  In October 2007 Inhye was back to continue her journey!  On April 23, 2008 Inhye completed her 10th speech in the Toastmasters Communication and Leadership Manual entitled "Journey to Self Discovery" to achieve the Competent Communicator Award!   She will receive a nice Competent Communicator Award certificate from Toastmasters International in about 10 days.

Inhye works as an in Employee Organizational Development at Rio Salado College and currently serves as Vice President Membership for Rio Copa Toastmasters.  Inhye plans to continue her journey by working through the Entertaining Speaker and Story Telling Advanced manuals.

Congratulations Inhye; You Rock!

Inhye's Competent Communicator Award helped our club achieve goal #2 on our Distinguished Club Plan.  Rio Copa Toastmasters is one Advanced Communicator award away from being a President's Distinguished club for the 4th year in a row!  This is especially significant since we'll be celebrating our 5th Anniversary as a club on May 13th.

Written by JD Austin
amyjetcc.jpgAmy 'Jet' Magsamen completed her 10th speech and achieved her Competent Communicator Award on March 26th.  She was not scheduled to speak but a speaker cancelled at the last minute.  True to form, Amy stepped up to take advantage of the speaking opportunity!
To achieve her Competent Communicator award Amy spoke on a wide variety of subjects including
  • The Essentials of Traveling and Trip Preparation: how to prepare for a vacation
  • A Down to Earth Look at Aerial Photography
  • Because I'm Smart:  a humorous story of 3 not so smart decisions and their consequences.
  • Slightly Used New Years Resolutions – Now Half Off: Resolutions gone by.
  • What a Drag: Cross-Dressing Tips for Men: clothing tricks that cross-dressing men and women can use to look better
  • The Secret of Powerful Sleep: Sleeping better even if you can't sleep longer.
  • Manifesting What You Want, and How I Spent my Valentines Day: A humorous take on creating your own opportunities in life.  After giving her speech she was inspired to make her vision of swimming with the dolphins in Bermuda a reality!
Throughout Amy's first 10 speeches she sprinkled a healthy dose of humor, humanity, and personal style.  She is now working towards her Advanced Communicator Bronze in the Advanced Speaking to Inform and Persuasive Speaking Manuals.

Amy 'Jet' Magsamen and Rico Burton achieve 1/2CC PDF Print E-mail
Written by JD Austin
AmyMags_Pat_halfcc.jpgAmy 'Jet' Magsamen joined Rio Copa Toastmasters in November 2007.  As a writer and photographer she wanted to improver her presentation and speaking skills.  She actually completed her 5th speech in January but it wasn't noticed until JD took over as acting Vice President Education.  Amy has been a leader in the club as our Vice President Public Relations and has served on several committees.    She took 2nd place in our club International Speech contest recently with an interesting solution for un-used vacation time... give it to her!
Amy was awarded her 1/2 CC Ribbon on March 19,2008.

Rico_Pat_halfcc.jpg Rico Burton joined our club a short three months ago!  During that time she's been on fire doing speeches.  In March she expressed interest in competing in the Toastmasters International Speech Contest and took 1st place!  That meant she had to compete 6 speeches by the date of the Area Speech contest.  She completed her 5th speech on March 19th and did speech number 6 the following week!  We look forward to seeing her compete at the R4 Area Speech Contest on April 5th.

Big Screen Success for Two Toastmasters! PDF Print E-mail
Written by JD Austin

If one of our greatest fears is public speaking, then one of our greatest triumphs is the successful accomplishment of it. Two Tempe, Arizona Toastmaster members recently enjoyed that great triumph and great success as they aptly handled a very bright spotlight and a very large audience.  Rio Copa club members, Matthew Wegner and Steve Swink, were in charge of introducing awards at the Independent Games Festival held in San Francisco, February 18-22. Two thousand eight was the tenth year for the growing event, but Matthew and Steve's first year at the helm.

Matthew and Steve own and operate Flashbang Studios , a five-year-old independent video games company in Tempe, Arizona.  They both have been members of the Rio Copa Toastmasters club since January 2007.  Rio Copa is a small club, even by Toastmasters standards, the weekly meetings range from 10-16 people. When Steve and Matthew presented the indie game awards, they did so in front of a live audience of approximately 6,000 people. The event was filmed by G4 television for later broadcast, which has a North American audience of 64 million viewers.

Wegner praised their Toastmasters' experience for helping to prepare him and Steve for success.  "...The experience we had in Toastmasters was a huge benefit.", Matthew says, "It was pretty amazing to be backstage, waiting to go on, and realizing that we were totally capable of handling this!"

The IGF awards have been described as the Sundance Festival of the videogame industry, and offer both global exposure and over $50,000 in cash prizes to the developers of the winning games. The festival was created to "encourage innovation in game development and to recognize the best independent game developers".  The awards are a major celebration of the best in indie gaming.

Steve Swink's and Matthew Wegner's games have been finalists in 2004 and 2006, but their leading participation in this year's event was momentous.  The entire Rio Copa Toastmasters club is proud to extend sincere congratulations to Matthew Wegner and Steve Swink on their notable achievement!
