RioCopa Toastmasters Club celebrated its 2nd anniversary
on May 13th. Initiated as a means for employees
of the Maricopa District
Support Service
Center and Rio Salado College to improve their speaking and
leadership skills, RioCopa is now an "open" club, where anyone who wishes to visit
as a guest or join the club is welcome.
If you have ever considered improving your speaking
skills; if you have ever wanted to discover how to be a better leader; if you
have ever thought of just doing something toward self-improvement, now is the
time to visit RioCopa Toastmasters. Guests are always welcome, and repeat visits are recommended to better
appreciate the diversity of the RioCopa experience.
The RioCopa club meets every Wednesday from 11:30
a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Rio
Salado College,
2323 W. 14th St.,
Tempe, AZ 85281. The meeting room for each week is posted on
the electronic marquee in the main lobby.
In
the Toastmasters program, typically each member starts - at his/her chosen pace
- through ten basic speeches, each of which focuses on specific aspects of
speaking before an audience. The "Icebreaker" speech is first, followed by exercises in vocal variety, use of
props, body language, persuasion, etc. Successful completion of these speeches leads to the Competent
Toastmaster award, or CTM, and the opportunity to pursue advanced goals via
the Toastmasters Leadership and/or Communication tracks.

Of the RioCopa club's twenty current members, Michael J.
Trier, Nicholas S. Orlando, Steven R. Martindale, John
Desmond, John D. Austin and Sandia L. Hayes have all attained
the CTM award or higher.
Shortly after the club's second birthday, RioCopa earned the
Toastmasters President's Distinguished Club award. A milestone that only about 10% of
Toastmasters clubs achieve, this award recognizes RioCopa's dedication to
membership recruitment and retention, as well as to the individual pursuit of
both communication and leadership goals.
RioCopa Toastmasters offers a professional, friendly, safe
and supportive environment. All members
share club responsibilities, and work toward common goals as equals. The club also promises a lot of fun,
adventure and learning on the road to becoming a Competent Toastmaster and
beyond.
